About Margaret Weis

Margaret Weis is an American fantasy and science-fiction author best known for helping establish Dragonlance as one of the defining shared worlds of modern fantasy publishing. Born and raised in Independence, Missouri, she studied literature and creative writing at the University of Missouri, graduating in 1970. Her career took its decisive turn in 1983 when she moved to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, to work as a book editor for TSR, the company behind Dungeons & Dragons. There she joined the developing Dragonlance project and began the collaboration with Tracy Hickman that would shape much of her writing career.

Weis and Hickman’s first novel together, Dragons of Autumn Twilight, appeared in 1984 and introduced readers to Krynn and the companions who became the Heroes of the Lance. The Dragonlance Chronicles and the subsequent Legends trilogy established characters such as Raistlin and Caramon Majere, Tanis Half-Elven, Sturm Brightblade, Tasslehoff Burrfoot, and Laurana while demonstrating how closely novels and role-playing world-building could reinforce one another. Dragonlance eventually expanded far beyond Weis and Hickman, with numerous writers contributing to the setting, but their novels remain its central narrative foundation.

Their partnership also produced several original fantasy worlds unrelated to Dragonlance. The Darksword books explored a society in which magic defines life itself, while Rose of the Prophet built a desert fantasy around competing gods, cultures, and religious power. The seven-volume Death Gate Cycle became one of their most elaborate creations, following Haplo through multiple sundered worlds whose histories gradually reveal a much larger conflict. Weis and Hickman later collaborated on Sovereign Stone and the Dragonships of Vindras, further establishing a partnership notable for large-scale settings, ensemble casts, and fantasy systems built around competing cultures and beliefs.

Weis has also produced substantial work apart from Hickman. Her Star of the Guardians sequence combines space opera with dynastic conflict and remains one of her major solo series. Other projects include the Dragonvarld trilogy and Dragonlance novels written independently or with collaborators such as Don Perrin. With Robert Krammes, she created the Dragon Brigade and Dragon Corsairs trilogies, while she and her daughter Lizz Weis collaborated on the paranormal novels Warrior Angel and Rebel Angel. These projects show that her bibliography extends considerably beyond the fantasy world with which she is most immediately associated.

Her connection to Dragonlance has endured for more than four decades. Weis and Hickman returned with the Dragonlance Destinies trilogy beginning in 2022, and in August 2026 they launched another Krynn trilogy with War Wizard, centered on the early friendship between the mage Magius and the legendary knight Huma.
