About Sandra Dallas

Sandra Dallas is an American bestselling author whose historical novels bring the lives of ordinary women into focus against the backdrop of the American West. Known for her richly detailed settings, memorable female characters, and sensitive portrayal of friendship and hardship, she writes about people confronting extraordinary circumstances with courage, resourcefulness, and determination. Her fiction spans the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, often exploring overlooked aspects of American history through the experiences of women whose contributions rarely appear in traditional historical accounts.

Born in Virginia, Dallas moved to Denver, Colorado, when she was six years old. Her childhood fascination with historic buildings, abandoned settlements, and stories of the past helped establish a lifelong interest in Western history. She later graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in journalism, beginning a professional career that would strongly influence her approach to historical fiction.

Dallas spent twenty-five years working for BusinessWeek, becoming the magazine’s first female bureau chief. Covering the Rocky Mountain region, she reported on subjects ranging from mining and energy development to financial scandals and unusual communities. Her reporting introduced her to the history, geography, and people of the American West, providing research experience that would prove invaluable when she turned to fiction.

Before becoming a novelist, Dallas established herself as a nonfiction author. Her early works examined Colorado’s historic buildings, ghost towns, mining communities, and regional culture. Books such as Colorado Ghost Towns and Mining Camps and Sacred Paint, a biography of artist Ned Jacob, reflected her interest in preserving the stories of places and individuals often overlooked by mainstream historical narratives.

Her fiction career began with Buster Midnight’s Cafe (1990), a novel examining friendship and the complicated lives of women whose experiences span several decades. She gained further recognition with The Persian Pickle Club (1995), set in Depression-era Kansas. Centred on a group of women who gather to quilt, the novel combines friendship, hardship, and mystery while examining the unspoken loyalties that bind a small community together.

Quilting became a recurring element in Dallas’s fiction, serving as both a historically grounded activity and a symbol of women’s shared experiences. In The Diary of Mattie Spenser (1998), she uses a fictional journal to portray the challenges faced by a young bride accompanying her husband to the Colorado frontier. The intimate narrative captures isolation, marriage, childbirth, and the harsh realities of pioneer life.

Other notable works include The Chili Queen (2002), Tallgrass (2007), and Prayers for Sale (2009). These novels demonstrate Dallas’s ability to combine compelling personal stories with historical events, including the Great Depression, Japanese American internment, and the difficulties experienced by women in isolated Western communities.

Her later fiction continued exploring neglected chapters of American history. True Sisters (2012) examines the experiences of Mormon handcart pioneers, while Westering Women (2020) follows women travelling westward in search of better lives. Little Souls (2022) portrays family relationships during the 1918 influenza pandemic, and Where Coyotes Howl (2023) returns to the hardships of frontier settlement.

Dallas has also written historical fiction for younger readers, including The Quilt Walk, Hardscrabble, and Tenmile. These novels introduce younger audiences to American history through protagonists facing difficult circumstances with resilience and independence.

Her achievements include multiple Spur Awards from Western Writers of America, recognition from Women Writing the West, and induction into the Colorado Authors’ Hall of Fame in 2021. Her novels have been translated into numerous languages.

Dallas’s writing is distinguished by meticulous historical research and an emphasis on human relationships rather than famous historical figures. Friendship, loyalty, prejudice, loss, and moral courage repeatedly shape her narratives, particularly through women navigating societies that offer them limited independence.

Across her fiction and nonfiction, Dallas has preserved a distinctive vision of the American West: not simply a landscape of explorers and frontier legends, but a place shaped by ordinary people whose sacrifices, relationships, and determination deserve an enduring place in its history.
