Jim Butcher is an American fantasy author best known for The Dresden Files, the long-running urban fantasy series that turned Harry Dresden, a professional wizard and private investigator in Chicago, into one of the genre’s most recognizable modern heroes. His official biography identifies him as the author of The Dresden Files, Codex Alera, and The Cinder Spires, the three series that define most of his published career. The series follows Tavi, a young man apparently without the furycrafting abilities everyone else possesses, as he becomes entangled in military danger, political intrigue, invasion, and the fate of Alera itself. Compared with The Dresden Files, Codex Alera is more traditional in its epic structure, but it shares Butcher’s love of tactical problem-solving, underdog resilience, and action built around clear magical rules.
The Cinder Spires, beginning with The Aeronaut’s Windlass, moves into a different mode: steampunk-influenced fantasy with airships, spires, aristocratic houses, warriorborn, crystals, naval-style combat, and unusually prominent cats. The second novel, The Olympian Affair, was published in 2023, while the novella Warriorborn expanded the setting shortly before it.
